As Chinese consumers shifted to in-home drinking post-pandemic, CANs dominated nearly 70% of in-home beer consumption. Corona faced a fundamental challenge: traditional CAN openings could not enable the brand’s iconic Lime Ritual, putting its core brand asset at risk. Chinese consumers cherish this ritual as the signal to unwind. Instead of adapting the ritual to the CAN, we chose to redesign the CAN around the ritual.
We launched Corona Lime Drop Can: its full-lid allows lime to drop in effortlessly, while the patented self-foaming coating creates a rich mushroom-top foam, releasing aromas as lime meets golden liquid. This innovation fully preserved Corona’s unwinding moment in a CAN for the first time. Beyond a packaging innovation, it is also a strategic move to bring the brand’s soul into the heart of in-home occasions.
The innovation resonated strongly, driving 181% year-on-year sales growth, with the Lime Drop CAN contributing nearly half of the incremental growth, alongside measurable gains in brand equity. We safeguarded Corona’s non-negotiable ritual, proving that experience-led innovation can win both the market and consumers’ hearts.
